JCA celebrates 18th anniversary

JCA, a leading provider of building engineering services, interior fit out, service and maintenance and design services, is celebrating its 18th anniversary this month.

We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved working together over the last 18 years and would like to take a moment to thank our employees, clients and supply partners for the continuous support they have shown us.

Steady growth

JCA Engineering was incorporated in 2004 by a team of engineers who each held in excess of 20 years of experience within the building engineering services sector, data centre and critical services sector and air conditioning product manufacturing industry.

The company has grown over the last 18 years, not only by reaching out and forming new and evolving client relationships, but also in embracing change over the period; understanding the need for change and to ever improve the service level provision, the need to also excel beyond client expectation and to adapt to changes in markets and sectors in which JCA operates. Whilst the business has always performed well in the context of the economic conditions in all the trading periods, it holds the belief that constant improvement should be sought, achieved by challenging assumptions, so as to enhance the service delivery.

Today, JCA is a multi-disciplinary, engineering led organisation providing services to a diverse range of business sectors and end user clients. The company has many facets, not just delivering a broad spectrum of our “design build maintain“ services, but also managing and mitigating client specific operational risks, particularly in operational and critical environments, such as data centres and hospitals.

JCA’s philosophy, culture and its people

The JCA philosophy in relation to management is client focused, managing engineering solutions, processes, procedures, whilst mitigating risk for the client as well as the business and the staff employed. JCA is a business that is as passionate about its people as it is for the creativity and imagination of its engineering.

The staff are key in ensuring the core business culture and ethos is maintained. The company employs a highly skilled, customer orientated team, bringing together a range of specialist technical proficiencies. Clients are assigned a team owner responsible for delivering unrivalled levels of customer service as well as industry expertise. This approach is consistent across all client engagements ranging from a mobile maintenance contract to a design and build construction project. In this way, the JCA team understand the long-term orientation toward high levels of service and client retention, the output of which is detailed and considered thinking, ultimately solutions that consider the full life cycle of customer contracts and support our client’s individual business drivers.

Leading the away in health and safety

JCA has always been committed to the health and safety of its employees, subcontractors and clients. In 2018, JCA issued its very first submission in the RoSPA Awards scheme and was subsequently awarded the RoSPA Gold Award. The following year, 2019, was even more successful with yet another RoSPA Gold Award achieved, as well as the prestigious and coveted RoSPA Health at Work major trophy award. This latest award emphasised JCA’s position as a leader in promoting health and safety and wellbeing within the business and throughout the supply chain. This year, JCA has won the coveted RoSPA Gold Medal Award, having been awarded the RoSPA Gold Award for the 5th consecutive year.

EAP Awareness Week 2022

This week, at JCA we are holding our second annual Employee Assistance Programme Awareness Week to increase the familiarity of our employees with the types of support and assistance available through our EAP, now in its seventh year.

Our theme for this year is ‘Community’ and we are emphasising the importance of community – both in our private lives (family, friends) and at work (our teammates, colleagues).

Throughout the week we are sharing valuable information, tips and advice on different areas of support provided by our external EAP provider. The services include help with home and work life, physical and emotional health, wellbeing resources, self-help programmes, webinars and other.

Employee Assistance Programme

JCA values the health and wellbeing of all our employees and recognises that balancing everyday life together with the requirements of work and home can create pressure for everyone. We aim to establish a positive health and wellbeing culture that includes awareness, understanding, effective processes and positive behaviour by employees at all levels.

As part of our commitment to health and wellbeing of our staff, we implemented an Employee Assistance Programme in 2016, delivered by an independent external organisation, which provides confidential support and guidance relating to personal issues via telephone and online advice, support and counselling services.

Wellbeing at the core

At JCA, we fully recognise that mental and physical health and wellbeing are equally important and that work can have a potential impact on both.

We have an employee wellbeing policy that sets out and manages our obligations to maintain the mental health and wellbeing of our staff. The policy covers JCA’s commitment to employee health, the responsibilities of managers and others for maintaining psychological health, health promotion initiatives, communicating and training on health issues, the range of support available for the maintenance of mental health, and organisational commitment to handling individual issues.

Trained to help

We take a “we’re in this together” approach – everyone has their part to play in ensuring that support can be accessed as needed, with dedicated support roles available. We have mental aid first aiders who are trained in mental health awareness and can support mental ill health and offer sign posted support.

Talking about mental health at work can be daunting: people may worry about how they will be treated and how their colleagues will react. We therefore invited JCA employees across the business to volunteer to become Health and Wellbeing Champions. Our Champions help implement and support JCA’s wellbeing and mental health programme through raising awareness of wellbeing, promoting healthy lifestyles and positive mental health. Every Champion attended an internationally recognised training course ‘Mental Health Champions’, accredited by Mental Health First Aid (MHFA).

Health and Wellbeing Champions can support workplace culture and make a difference to the lives of work colleagues, working with the organisation to make mental health a normal topic of conversation, dispelling myths and providing another avenue for people to seek support.

A number of our senior managers and line managers have also attended ‘Line Manager Mental Health Awareness Training’ run by Mind, with further sessions to be arranged later this year.  This training aims to provide line managers with a better understanding of mental health difficulties and the confidence to  manage mental health in the workplace, which promotes wellbeing and understanding across the teams and reduces perceived stigma when discussing mental health issues.
